What is the function of the Supervisor of Assessments?

The Supervisor of Assessments strives to administer an accurate, fair, uniform, and timely assessment of all real property in Shelby County for the purposes of real property taxation in accordance with and mandated by the Illinois Property Tax Code. Duties required under the Illinois Property Tax Code include:

  1. Assembling township assessors for instruction on the assessment process (35 ILCS 200/9-15)
  2. Preparing and maintaining tax maps and parcel ownership information. (35 ILCS 200/9-35)
  3. Administer exemptions to homestead properties. (35 ILCS 200/15-165)
  4. Providing mail notice and Publication to owners of property with revised assessments (35 ILCS 200/12-30)
  5. Equalizing assessments within the county or any area therein (35 ILCS 200/9-210)
  6. Reporting statistical abstracts to the Illinois Department of Revenue (35 ILCS 200/17-15)
  7. Serving as clerk to the Board of Review (35 ILCS 200/3-30)
  8. Assist taxpayers with inquiries and concerns.
  9. Maintain an up-to-date property record system.
